American holidays: customs and traditions

Customs and traditions of USA Traditions and customs play a great part in the nation, which consists of many ethnic communities and is often called a nation of immigrants. Technically there are no « national » holidays as each state has jurisdiction over its holidays but in fact most of the US holidays are celebrated nationally.

Customs and traditions The states observe federal public holidays. These are Thanksgiving Day, Independence Day, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Columbus Day and some others.

Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving day is considered the most American of the holidays. It is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. The holiday commemorates the first hard year the Pilgrims lived in the New World.

Thanksgiving Day When the English Pilgrims first came to the New World they had a very hard winter and it was questionable whether most of them would survive. When they began planting seeds they had to struggle with the rocky soil and bitter climate.

Thanksgiving Day Finally in the fall the fields produced a yield beyond expectations. They couldn’t have done it on their own. Thanksgiving also includes the native American Indians who helped them and showed them how to use fish heads as fertilizers.

Thanksgiving Day If it hadn’t been for the Indians, there might not have been the first Thanksgiving. In 1863 president Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring Thanksgiving a federal holiday.

Thanksgiving Day Today it is very much a family holiday celebrated with big dinners and happy family reunions. It is a time for families to get together for what is often a long weekend.

Thanksgiving Day The traditional food is Thanksgiving turkey and pumpkin pie. In recent years the holiday has become even more popular.

Independence Day Independence Day is also very important because it celebrates the nation’s independence from Great Britain and the real founding of the United States as a country.

Independence Day The fourth of July is the day when back in 1776 the Declaration of Independence, a document which declared the 13 American colonies free and independent states, was adopted.

Independence Day The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson, who later became the nation’s third president.

Independence Day Since Independence Day is a summer holiday and a day off from work, many families enjoy picnics or outings. In the evening there are always fireworks. The occasion is also commemorated by colorful and noisy parades.

Christmas Christmas , December 25, is the most festive time of the year in the US. Students from elementary school through college have one to two weeks’ vacation beginning shortly before Christmas and ending after the New Year.

Christmas Many families go away for the holiday and there are numerous parties. In the USA the spirit of Christmas arrives about a month before the holiday itself.

Christmas Late in November, streetlights and store windows are decorated with the traditional Christmas colors of red and green. Families decorate their homes, inside and out, with colored lights and evergreen.

Christmas The most beautiful and meaningful aspects of the holiday occur at home. Usually families gather around the Christmas tree, open their gifts and then sit down to enjoy a traditional Christmas dinner - turkey or ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and nuts.

Christmas For dessert, there is usually fruit cake, plum pudding, or mince pie. Most of Christmas customs are variations of traditions brought to America by European immigrants.

Christmas The most popular are: exchanging gifts, receiving toys from Santa Claus, decorating the home with evergreen (especially green wreaths), singing Christmas Carols (songs of joy and praise), making Christmas tree.

Christmas All over the USA many communities make a large Christmas tree the center of their holiday activities. Several such trees become traditional: the one at Rockefeller Center in New York City.

Christmas The “Nation’s Christmas Tree”is in King’s Canyon National Park, California and the tree in Washington D.C. in front of the White House.

Columbus Day Throughout most of the US Columbus Day, the anniversary of the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492 is celebrated on the second Monday in October.

Columbus Day It is believed that the first celebration of the discovery of America occurred in New York in 1792 but it was not until 1934 that all states were asked to observe Columbus Day as a federal holiday.

Columbus Day Columbus is admired for his courage, self-confidence and perseverance. American children love to retell and dramatize the exciting tale of his famous voyage in 1492.

Holidays in the USA

Every nation and every country has its own customs and traditions. They reflect the history of the country and its cultural and religious traditions. There are some special holidays which are usually celebrated in a particular country. But there are also international holidays which are celebrated in all countries world-wide.

The history of the Americans is history of immigration. Immigrants brought their customs and traditions. That’s why the USA is a mixture of different cultures.

International holidays International holidays are holidays celebrated in different parts of the world – New Year, Christmas, St. Patrick"s Day , Easter, Helloween and so on.

St. Patrick"s Day St. Patrick"s Day is celebrated on the 17 th of March. St. Patrick is a patron of Ireland , who converted the Irish to Christianity. There are a lot of Irish people in the USA, that’s why St. Patrick is very popular here. Celebrations include prominent displays of the color green, feasting, and numerous parades. The holiday has been celebrated on the North American continent since the late 18th century.

Helloween Halloween is a festival that takes place on October 31. In the United States children wear costumes and masks and go trick-or-treating. Many of them carve jack-o"-lantens out of pumpkins. Fortunetelling and storytelling about ghosts and witches are popular activities. Halloween developed from new year festivals and festivals of the dead. Christian church established a festival on November 1 called All Saints" Day so that people could continue to celebrate their festivals.

Father’s Day People in the United States honor their fathers with special day: Father’s Day. This holiday is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. Father’s Day dates back to 1909, when one daughter, a certain Mrs. Dodd from Spokane, Washington, wanted to honor her own father who had raised four sons and a daughter after her mother’s death. Although the first Father’s Day was observed in Spokane in 1910 and it has been likewise observed in many other states for many decades, Father’s Day did not become a national holiday until Senator Margaret Chase Smith helped to establish it as such in 1972. Giving cards and gifts is the tradition of this holiday. Children make them in schools. Many people make their own presents.

Mother’s Day In the United States Americans honor their mothers and grandmothers, on the second Sunday in May. This day is set aside to show love and respect for mother. On Mother’s Day children give thanks for the support, love, care. Giving cards and gifts is also tradition. Children often make Mother’s Day gifts in school - decorated boxes and picture frames. Another common gift for mothers is the “mother ring,” a ring set with the birthstones of each of the members of the family.

National holidays in the USA Talking about national holidays in the USA I must say that many states have holidays of their own, but there are also major holidays observed in nearly all the USA. Let’s talk about some of them.

On January 15th, people in the United States celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a great civil rights leader who fought against racial discrimination. He said that people should be judged by their characters, and not the color of their skin. He believed in integration. He received national attention when he protested the injustice of segregated buses in Alabama. Martin Luther King is remembered in church memorial services, marches, and public ceremonies. People also listen to his speeches, watch TV documentaries. In schools, students read about this leader, study his writings and celebrate his memory with special programs. Politicians and performers also participate in celebrations to honor Martin Luther King.

Memorial Day The last Monday in May is Memorial Day. This is a national holiday to remember the dead. The first Memorial Day was many years ago after the Civil War (1861 –1865). After the war, people wanted to remember the dead. So around 1866, people began to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. People called this day Decoration Day or Poppy Day (Poppies are small red flowers). On the Memorial Day, Americans honor the servicemen who gave their lives in past wars. Schools, clubs and churches decorate the cemeteries. They put up the flags on the graves of the army, navy and airmen. They hold memorial services in churches, halls, parks and cemeteries.

Independence Day July 4th is Independence Day. Another name for Independence Day is the Fourth of July. On this day in 1776 the final of the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson, was adopted. Government offices, banks, and schools close. Most people don’t go to work. Families and friends get together outside for picnics. Traditionally the Fourth of July is celebrate with firing of guns and fireworks, parades open – air meetings and speeches praising “Americanism, democracy, free enterprise.” It is also a day to think about freedom. The Declaration of Independence says everyone has the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The Declaration of Independence more than 200 years old, but its ideas are important today.

I n conclusion I would like to say that we watch American films, read American literature, celebrate American holidays. That’s why it was interesting for me to learn more about American holidays that are connected with the history of the USA.

AMERICAN HOLIDAYS

by Sergey Andronaki

Christmas Day

Many people in the United States celebrate Christmas Day on December 25. The day celebrates Jesus Christ"s birth. It is often combined with customs from pre-Christian winter celebrations.

It is interesting to visit USA during this holiday. People celebrate Christmas Day in many ways. In the days or even weeks before Christmas Day, many people decorate their homes and gardens with lights, Christmas trees and much more. It is common to organize a special meal, often consisting of turkey and a lot of other festive foods, for family or friends and exchange gifts with them. Children, in particular, often receive a lot of gifts from their parents and other relatives and the mythical figure Santa Claus. This has led to Christmas Day becoming an increasingly commercialized holiday, with a lot of families spending a large part of their income on gifts and food.

Groundhog Day

" If Candlemas Day is bright and clear,

There"ll be twa (two) winters in the year .“

The day is associated with folklore which has grown up in rural America. It is believed, by some, if the groundhog, or woodchuck comes out of its hole in the ground and sees its shadow on that day it will become frightened and jump back in. This means there will be at least six more weeks of winter. If it doesn"t see its shadow, it will not be afraid and spring will begin shortly.

Valentine"s Day

The first recorded association of Valentine"s Day with romantic love is in Parlement of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer.

For this was on seynt Volantynys day

Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.

["For this was Saint Valentine"s Day, when every bird cometh there to choose his mate."]

One other day that most Americans observe, even though it is not an official holiday, is February 14, Valentine"s Day, named for an early Christian martyr whose feast day was once observed on that day. On this day, Americans give special symbolic gifts to people they love. They also send special greeting cards called Valentines to such people. Most commonly, the gifts are candy or flowers.

Modern Valentine"s Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

Flag Day

The American Flag was adopted through the Second Continental Congress within the First Flag Quality of June fourteen, 1777. The quality read:

“ Resolved, that the flag of America be thirteen lines, alternate red as well as white; that the actual union be 13 stars, white inside a blue field representing a brand new constellation Flag Day 2011. “

Independence Day

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.

Labor Day

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 3 in 2012) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers.

Recent research indicates that, in 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York.

Columbus Day

Columbus Day first became an official state holiday in Colorado in 1906, and became a federal holiday in 1937, though people have celebrated Columbus" voyage since the colonial period. In 1792, New York City and other U.S. cities celebrated the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. President Benjamin Harrison called upon the people of the United States to celebrate Columbus Day on the 400th anniversary of the event.

During the four hundredth anniversary, in 1892, teachers, preachers, poets and politicians used Columbus Day rituals to teach ideals of patriotism. These patriotic rituals were framed around themes such as support for war, citizenship boundaries, the importance of loyalty to the nation, and celebrating social progress.

National Arbor Day

Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. It originated in Nebraska City, Nebraska, United States during 1872 by J. Sterling Morton. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872, and an estimated 1 million trees were planted that day.

HALLOWEEN

Halloween is celebrated on October 31. On Halloween, American children dress up in funny or scary costumes and go "trick or treating" by knocking on doors in their neighborhood. The neighbors are expected to respond by giving them small gifts of candy or money. Halloween imagery includes themes of death, evil, the occult or mythical monsters. Black and orange are the holiday"s traditional colors.

Veterans Day, formerly Armistice Day, is an annual United States holiday honoring armed service veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. (Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 with the German signing of the Armistice.)

Veteran`s day

THANKSGIVING DAY

The American Thanksgiving holiday began as a feast of thanksgiving in the early days of the American colonies almost four hundred years ago.

Thanksgiving Day is a federal holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. In the fall of 1621, the Pilgrims held a three-day feast to celebrate a bountiful harvest. Many regard this event as the nation"s first Thanksgiving.

The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition and almost always includes some of the foods served at the first feast: roast turkey, cranberry sauce, potatoes, and pumpkin pie.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day

On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941 America"s naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the forces of the Empire of Japan. More than 2,400 Americans were killed and more than 1,100 were wounded. The attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships and damaged four more. It also damaged or sank three cruisers, three destroyers, one minelayer and damaged 188 aircraft.

National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which is observed annually on December 7, is to remember and honor all those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a United States federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around the time of King"s birthday, January 15. The floating holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, though the act predated the establishment of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by 15 years.

King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.

The campaign for a federal holiday in King"s honor

began soon after his assassination in 1968.

Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983,

and it was first observed on January 20, 1986 .

The population of the United States is made up of people of very many nationalities. Their predecessors came to America from different countries, and they brought their native celebrations with them.

They all became Americans, but they kept many traditions of those countries they had come from. That is why the number of holidays in different states of America is different. But the most important holidays are marked throughout the United States.
